Personalities[]

Apple Bloom[]

Apple Bloom makes her first prominent appearance in Bridle Gossip. At first she huddles in Sugarcube Corner with the other ponies who are hiding from Zecora, an alleged "evil enchantress". Apple Bloom asserts that she isn't actually afraid of Zecora and that she's "not a baby" and doesn't need Applejack's protection.

When Twilight Sparkle tries to reason everyone into talking to Zecora instead of hiding from her, Apple Bloom is the only pony who listens to and agrees with everything Twilight says. To prove that she isn't as immature and timid as Applejack thinks she is, Apple Bloom follows Zecora into the Everfree Forest. Later, when the ponies come to Zecora demanding answers, they find that Apple Bloom has already befriended Zecora and volunteered to help her brew a remedy for poison joke.

In The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000, Apple Bloom is among the few ponies to challenge Flim and Flam's claims that they can produce more, better cider than her family. In Somepony to Watch Over Me, she asserts her independence when Applejack becomes overprotective of her and tries to make a dangerous pie delivery by herself.

Apple Bloom starts her enthusiastic pursuit of a cutie mark in Call of the Cutie, along with Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo. This theme continues in early episodes such as Stare Master, The Show Stoppers, The Cutie Mark Chronicles, and The Cutie Pox. She is very adamant about finding her cutie mark in Call of the Cutie and manages to persuade Twilight Sparkle to try to magically make her cutie mark appear, even though Twilight tells her it's no use. She's very aggressive with her salesmanship in the episode and even tries to pressure Sweetie Drops and Berryshine into buying some apples.

Apple Bloom and her friend Twist are derisively called "blank flanks" by Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara, who invite them to their cute-ceañera to rub it in. Apple Bloom, with Rainbow Dash helping, decides to dedicate herself to getting her cutie mark, but despite her best efforts, she cannot find what she's good at. Her feeling of hopelessness is made even worse when Twist gets her cutie mark before she goes. Later, at the cute-ceañera, she makes friends with fellow blank flanks Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle, who come to her defense when Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara deride her again. The three blank flanks form the Cutie Mark Crusaders, a club whose purpose is finding their hidden talents so they can earn their cutie marks.

Apple Bloom's focus on getting her cutie mark leads her to make a potion out of Zecora's Heart's Desire plant in The Cutie Pox, which causes her to contract the titular disease and sprout multiple cutie marks, forced to do whatever talents the marks represent. In Ponyville Confidential, Apple Bloom convinces her friends to pursue journalism as the means of getting their cutie marks. Her determination carries her as far as damaging the reputation of her siblings for the sake of her goal, although she feels guilt in doing so.

In the season five episode Bloom & Gloom, Apple Bloom starts having anxiety over getting her cutie mark before Princess Luna shows her the dreams Sweetie and Scootaloo are having. Apple Bloom's quest for a cutie mark is eventually realized in Crusaders of the Lost Mark when she and her friends discover their destiny in helping other ponies discover theirs.

In Appleoosa's Most Wanted, Apple Bloom, along with her Crusader friends, is driven to help Trouble Shoes realize his true talent and overcome his reputation of bringing bad luck. It is through helping their bully Diamond Tiara become a better pony that Apple Bloom finally earns her cutie mark and discovers a passion for helping others with their cutie mark-related troubles.

In On Your Marks, Apple Bloom helps Tender Taps overcome his stage fright and get his cutie mark in dancing. In The Fault in Our Cutie Marks, she helps Gabby the griffon realize her own talent in helping others even if she can't ever get a cutie mark. Other ponies that Apple Bloom and her friends have helped include Bulk Biceps, Petunia Paleo, Chipcutter, and Zipporwhill.

Apple Bloom states in Forever Filly, "Helpin' ponies is just about my favorite thing to do." In The Perfect Pear, it is revealed that Apple Bloom inherited her love of helping others realize their special talents from her mother Pear Butter. Apple Bloom's cutie mark has an apple with a heart in it.

Sweetie Belle[]

True to her name, Sweetie Belle is very kind-hearted and innocent. Despite this, she is often mischievous, vain, naive, and impetuous. However, Sweetie Belle remains positive and well-meaning in times of crisis, especially if she is responsible. In The Show Stoppers, Apple Bloom describes Sweetie Belle's voice as "totally awesome". When the Crusaders are about to go onstage for their performance, Twilight Sparkle is surprised to learn that Sweetie Belle does not have a singing role. However, Sweetie Belle says that she dislikes the idea of singing in front of a crowd. Sweetie Belle's showmanship and powerful voice overpower those of Fluttershy in Stare Master when Sweetie Belle turns Fluttershy's lullaby into a lively gospel-style song. In Hearts and Hooves Day, she leads the The Perfect Stallion song. In Sleepless in Ponyville, when singing the campfire song 99 Buckets of Oats On the Wall after Scootaloo suggests it in order to stay awake and avoid having nightmares, she sings terribly. In Bloom & Gloom, she dreams that she is about to sing on stage.

In Crusaders of the Lost Mark, Sweetie Belle receives her cutie mark, which has a star with a musical note in it, reflecting her singing voice.

Scootaloo[]

Scootaloo is energetic and tomboyish, much like her idol Rainbow Dash. She complains about having to listen to "sappy" and "namby-pamby" stories in The Cutie Mark Chronicles. However, like the other Crusaders, she finds Big McIntosh and Cheerilee's romance charming in Hearts and Hooves Day. Although brash and spunky, she is skittish and self-conscious in Sleepless in Ponyville. But Scootaloo does have a friendly side and a kind, caring and forgiving heart, and she does look up to her fellow crusaders.

Scootaloo still hasn't been able to master flying. In Ponyville Confidential, she flaps her wings to no avail when she falls out of a tree. Despite her limited flying skills, she is able to masterfully use her wings for propulsion and various stunts on her scooter. Scootaloo performs various skating tricks in The Show Stoppers, such as jumping off a ramp over an awe-struck crowd, doing a 360 and a tailwhip, and passing her scooter underneath a branch while she jumps over the branch and back onto her scooter. In The Show Stoppers and The Cutie Mark Chronicles, she uses her wings to pull loaded wagons with little trouble. Scootaloo hovers along the ground while talking about Rainbow Dash in The Cutie Mark Chronicles. By One Bad Apple, Scootaloo shows some improvement in her capabilities and can hover slightly higher and for a longer period of time than in previous episodes.

There is a running gag throughout the series that the other members of the Cutie Mark Crusaders tend to tease Scootaloo by referring to her as a type of flightless bird: A chicken in Stare Master, and a dodo in The Return of Harmony. Scootaloo tends to react rather defensively to this.

Flight to the Finish heavily centers in on Scootaloo's inability to fly. She becomes obsessed with her difficulties flying, and feels that it makes her unqualified to represent the Pegasi of Ponyville in the flag-carrying ceremony for the Equestria Games. She specifically identifies her relatively small wings compared to her body size as the cause of her inability, something she admits is unusual for a Pegasus her age, and expresses her fear that they will never grow and she will never be able to fly. However Rainbow Dash tells Scootaloo that this is not as important as she thinks and that, regardless of whether she'll fly or not, she's still special in her own way. Scootaloo is thus inspired to tow her two friends to the Crystal Empire using her wing-propelled scooter, and they are chosen to represent Ponyville as its flag carriers. In Bloom & Gloom, when Scootaloo discovers she is still dreaming, she flies around the clubhouse perfectly. In Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?, she flies in a dream once again, giving herself giant wings.

In On Your Marks, Scootaloo takes up bungee jumping, which she claims to like more than scooting.

In Parental Glideance, with the help of Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo travels to Cloudsdale through the use of her scooter, a giant slingshot and a steep wooden ramp.

After briefly becoming a seapony in Surf and/or Turf, Scootaloo deeply enjoys swimming in the ocean, believing it is what flying must be like.

Scootaloo's cutie mark has a wing with a lightning bolt in it.
