In Liam's Series[]

  • You can bet your sandals...
  • To be fair, living on an island isn't easy. Depending on which one, everything is more expensive because everything is imported. Of course, there are rain seasons and cyclone periods. There are a few restaurants where I live.
  • My family never buys any Christmas cards, we make them by hand.
  • Each morning, mom would start the day with her training at the beach close by at our house. She, Poliwrath and Floatzel would begin with a 500m beach run; the softer the sand, the better followed up with a 200m swim each for ten minutes, plus 50 lunges, a sprint back to start, 10 burpees, and a 1-minute plank along with a 25m beach sprint, 50m swim and 10 pushups.
  • Yeah, it's like in one of those RPG video games I used to play back home. A party of at least four is better than a party of one.
  • My mother warned me never to take gifts from a stranger.
  • We also never buy glossy foil or metallic wrapping paper.
  • I always check the with the surf weather forecast before I go surfing. This includes the sea temperature, wave height and wind speed. If the waves are too treacherous for surfing, then me and my Pokémon play beach volleyball instead.
  • During Fire Prevention Week in nursery school, my Uncle Aidan who is a fire captain would come to our class to teach us about what to do in case of a fire, such as "stop, drop and roll if your clothes catch fire", "crawl low under smoke", "plan escape routes" and all that stuff.
  • Excuse me, but who's Team Rocket? (Upon meeting Team Rocket for the first time)
  • Cowabunga!
  • HOW DARE YOU TREAT THOSE LAPRAS SO SHAMEFULLY?!
  • Funny, I also recognize that sound as well. When I first started my Pokémon journey, I heard that sound when Pichu and I were out in the middle of the ocean during a hurricane where we were attacked by the angry Gyarados. I was worried we'd both be done for, but then I heard that same melody. I looked in the water after the hurricane died down, and I saw the same eyes and that same shape in the water.
  • Hey guys. I think there was a problem with Espeon. She was looking rather sluggish and she was losing her speed out there in battle for some reason.
  • Ringo, Shadow Ball attack!
  • Oh, yes. I remember seeing that live on television with my family. We were all gathered in the family room to watch the Pokémon League competition and I was so excited to see the first round as we watch the competition every single year. Ever since then, I've dreamed of being a Pokemon trainer and traveling across the land, searching far and wide for lots of wild Pokémon, and battling other trainers.
  • Ah! Ringo!
  • Oh, no. My mother always warned me about getting into a stage coach with strange men.
  • That would be Pichu. He's a baby so he can't control his own electricity without shocking himself.
  • Why, yes he is.
  • Yes, cousin Carol. And so am I.
  • Seel, Ice Beam attack!
  • It sure is, cousin!
  • And the tall fella is Tracey Sketchit, a Pokémon Watcher and a dear childhood friend of mine.
  • Ringo, return! Okay, Kanehekili, it's up to you now. You're my only hope. Go!
  • Kanehekili, dodge it and then use Iron Tail!
  • Whoa. Bummer...
  • Seel, quick! Dive into the pool and then use Ice Beam on the whole entire battlefield!
  • I'm doing fine, Carol. So what are you and Melody up to these days?
  • Kanehekili!
  • Come on, Misty, lighten up a bit. I mean, Ash just may be the real chosen one in the ancient legend.
  • My cousin.
  • Wait. Cousin Carol? Is that you?
  • Dewgong, Aqua Ring!
  • Are you okay?
  • Don't be sad, you were great out there, you battled hard all the way to end, and I could not be any more proud of you.
  • It's today? Cowabunga! It's my favorite island holiday!
  • You deserve a nice long rest.
  • Oh, yes. It's the Legend Festival, you guys. I would like you to meet my cousin Carol.
  • How are those Eevee babies, Brock?
  • Y-y-you mean...my Umbreon, Ringo is...a daddy? (She turns to Ringo) Ringo, is this true? You're their daddy?
  • Ringo, I don't know how to say goodbye. I will miss you so very much...but Espeon needs you to take care of her and her babies. I just wish I could have one more day with you, but now I understand that you have a family. Goodbye, Ringo. I will remember you, and I...will always love you, no matter what. (Miki tears up as she embraces Ringo one last time)
  • It just won't be easy to say goodbye, Ringo. You have always been there for me when I needed you most. I'll never forget the day that I have found a special friend who never let me down. Ringo, you're the best friend that I've found. I know that you can't stay, but a part of me will never go away. No matter where you go, I will always be with you...forever.
  • Farewell, Ringo! I will always love you! Take good care of Espeon and her babies.
  • Thanks, Sydney. I do hope Espeon and Ringo will be okay out there.
  • You did, Ash?
  • Of course, we never buy new costumes, we design and make our own. Sometimes, we even swap them with our friends, relatives or neighbors. As for me, I'm really bad at sewing, but my eldest sister, she's a natural at that.
  • As a matter of fact, my hometown on Valencia Island doesn't even have any superstores or retail stores. Just a second-hand thrift shop, a farmer's market, a natural and organic community grocery store, and small simple shops.
  • Awesome!
  • Brace yourselves!
  • (shivering) P-P-Pichu, what has gotten into you?
  • She means in other legends in other parts of the world, the chosen one usually returns alive. And this one may not be too different.
  • Liam, look! Your Espeon has eight babies! She's a mommy!
  • Team Rocket!
  • Growing up, we would celebrate Halloween by carving pineapple Jack-o-lanterns. When there were pumpkins available, we would carve them with a beach theme, such as Krabby, seashells, Shellder, Staryu, lighthouse, anchors, beach umbrellas, fish skeleton, mermaids, palm trees and even sand dollars. Mom would then add a beachy exterior by spraying adhesive and rolling them in sand.
  • And where's he going with Ash's hat?
  • Mom, that is Team Rocket! They are the villains who steal and sell off rare and valuable Pokémon on the black market.
  • My hometown is a really small town near the seashore on Valencia Island. I live in a small cottage beach house that has an oceanfront.
  • Well, just who are you, anyway?
  • Good luck, Liam!
  • Aw, come on! Don't mind my cousin, Mist. She was just joking.
  • Bye, mom! Bye, daddy!
  • On Christmas Eve, we would leave a plate of Malasadas and an ice-cold glass of lemonade for Santa Claus.
  • Each year, mom and dad would host a Halloween beach party and invite their friends, family and neighbors over. Our Halloween parties varied, from a pirate-themed, forbidden tiki island or even haunted luau.
  • When I was real little, my sisters and I went trick-or-treating along with our cousins and my longtime childhood friend, Tracey Sketchit..
  • They even have a Halloween costume Surf and Cleanup where they surfers come to surf in costume and win a prize for best costume! After that, they join in on cleaning up the beaches.
  • There's even the Haunted Beach Manor, filled with ghosts and Ghost Pokémon...voodoo witch doctors, dead forest, Spinarak, Purrloin, Zubat, cursed tiki gods and stuff.
  • My long-time friend Tracey would sketch some ideas on his sketchbook.
  • We would also hang seashells, starfish or even sand dollars around the stem of our pumpkins and twine the netting around the stem for an extra nautical touch. Sometimes we would paint pumpkins in white-washed or pastel colors for an instant beach feel or even paint them like a beach ball. Dad would make a party pumpkin cooler and even used carved-out pumpkins when serving snacks at our Halloween parties.
  • Also, me, my cousins, childhood friend, and my sisters would paint seashells like jack-o-lanterns, nautical-themed pumpkins, and even create a Halloween scene in the sand using only beach objects or shells.
  • My parents took me and my sisters trick-or-treating to the Pokémon Center, Professor Ivy's lab, a Pokémart, a small grocery store, some shops, a farmer's market, the Kahuna Club...and only the houses of the neighbors we all know and trust very well.
  • Of course, mom and dad sometimes hosted Halloween pool parties. Where I live, Valencia Island is very hot throughout the year, at about an average of 95°F.
  • Mom would use prop skeletons, including the mermaid skeleton and have them chilling in the pool. Dad would use smoke, candles, Jack-o-lanterns and other props to create a perfect backdrop. Trinity would also set up the poolside.
  • And what Halloween would be complete without campfire Spooky stories, scavenger hunts, outdoor feasts, or making our own candy?
  • Of course, we never buy new costumes, we make our own from scratch. Sometimes, we even swap them with our friends, relatives or neighbors. As for me, I'm really bad at sewing, but my eldest sister, she's a natural at that.
  • Yeah, my mom says that grown-ups spend over $8.8 billion on costumes, candy, and other Halloween-related items each year. With all the money spent on the holiday, it can accumulate excess waste, including cheap single-use costumes and decorations. In addition, the amount of single-use plastic that is used to wrap candy is detrimental to the environment.
  • Mom and dad also host a costume swap with the community. Should we need any material to make our costumes, we shop at our local second-hand thrift store.
  • Instead of using plastic pails, my sisters, cousins and childhood friend Tracey and I would use a pillowcase or a reusable shopping bag whenever we went trick-or-treating.
  • Costumes sold at Halloween super-stores are often made of materials like PVC which contain phthalate. These materials may be flame-retardant but they end up in a landfill leaking toxic chemicals into the environment. In fact, extended exposure to these chemicals could have adverse health effects, so that is why all our costumes are homemade.
  • Not only are the costumes and decorations comprised of materials which are non-combustible, the plastic packaging they come in only compounds their harmful impact. Rather than waste money on decorations which will likely be thrown out the next day, we recycle egg cartons into Zubats and Golbats or make skeletons out of recycled milk jugs. We even turn old stockings with tears can be made into spider webs, and add a construction paper Spinarak as well.
  • When hosting parties, we never use paper, plastic plates, straws, tablecloths, cups or cutlery. Instead, we stick with BPA-free plastics since my dad is allergic to BPA, paperboards, or woods that all can be recycled. Better yet, we also use our own silverware, our own glasses and our own dishes. Also, we only send online invitations which saves paper and trees. And we only use reusable straws, period.
  • We also do not use glowstick accessories of any kind because not only are glow necklaces and bracelets made of single-use plastic but they also contain yucky chemicals (mainly phenol) and dyes that can irritate the skin should the tube leak or break, especially since I have a cousin who is allergic to phenol. Instead, mom would grab us some LED flashlights when we went trick-or-treating. Plus we have reflective tape that reflects light so people know where we are.
  • We only purchase locally grown, organic pumpkins. We also remember to compost our pumpkins, save the seeds from carving for roasting them with a little oil and salt, or use the insides for delicious breads, pies, muffins, soups, and other recipes...
  • When it comes to treats, mom only chooses organic, non-GMO candy in recycled packaging. She also gives out mandarin oranges with smiles, mini boxes of raisins, pencils, friendship bracelets, LED rings and whistles to the trick-or-treaters. Heck, most of the time, she even makes homemade treats herself.
  • Mom and dad organize carpools to reduce the amount of people driving to their Halloween parties. They would take my sisters, my cousins, Tracey and me trick or treating in local neighborhoods they could walk to. My folks would provide special door prizes for those that showed up with proof of an environmentally-friendly way to get to their place such as a bicycle.
  • Alright, Kathy! You go girl!
